Waiting on Wednesday: These Broken Stars, by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a meme created by Jill at Breaking the Spine that
features books yet to be released that we can't wait to read.

Author: Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Title: These Broken Stars
Series: Starbound #1
Genre: YA sci-fi
Pages: 384
Released: Dec. 10, 2013
Publisher: Hyperion
It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.

Holy cover love, Batman! Like...wow. Gorgeous.

I've been looking forward to this book for quite some time. It just sounds incredibly amazing! I love sci-fi books that actually take place IN space. Plus, I love a good romance. Therefore, this book sounds like the perfect fit for me, yes? I think so.

What book are YOU looking forward to?

2013: The Year of the Series Endings

Okay, has anyone else noticed that 2013 seems to the end of SO MANY series?! Especially trilogies. This is very upsetting. What the heck am I going to do with my life once all my favorite series are over?

All I'm saying is there better be some pretty stellar debuts to help me through the grieving process.

Anyway, I thought I'd use this post a tribute to some of the series that we're saying goodbye to this year.

2013 is hitting me harder than last year, just because 2011 was the first year that I really started book blogging, so I was really invested in the 2011 debuts and the series that started that year. It feels like my peeps are all graduating, and I don't know what to do with myself.

Don't worry, I'll pass the tissues.

Rae Carson

This is one of my favorite YA high fantasy series. Rae Carson just killed it with these books. I'm reading the last one right now, and I want to finish it in one sitting, but I'm trying to pace myself, spread out the Hector for as many days as possible.

Cassandra Clare

All the tears. ALL. THE. TEARS.

Sadly, I've already said goodbye to this one. I was a teary, snotty mess, I assure you. But it was just such a perfect ending and I don't think I could ever ask for more for my beloved Tessa, Jem, and Will.

Excuse me while I go cry in a corner.

Rachel Vincent

I've actually never read any of these books, but I know a lot of bloggers (like Wendy Darling over at The Midnight Garden) really love these books. I'd like to read them at some point, if only for the gorgeous covers.

I feel like saying goodbye to a series of seven books is almost harder than a trilogy. I'm very sorry, Soul Screamers fans. *pats backs*

Kady Cross

Umm...I think this is the end to this series. I haven't been able to find any definite info on that, but it seems like a trilogy. I've enjoyed this one, as it was one of my first ventures into steampunk territory. It definitely fueled my interest, and I'll be coming back for more steam-powered goodness in the future!

Amy Plum

Die for Me was one of my first digital galleys on NetGalley that I ever received. I feel like this trilogy is sentimental if for that reason only.

Also, I'm in love with Jules, and I'm dying to read his POV novella. (Did you see what I did there?)

BRING ON THE PARISIAN AWESOMESAUCE!

Josephine Angelini

Another one of my first NetGalley grabs. I went through a big mythology faze last year, and this was one of my favorite series at the time. I'm really anxious to see how these books end.

Also, HECTOR!!! (What is it with book boys and that name? They're the BEST!)

And on a side note: these covers sitting beside each other are gorgeous, especially the last one.

Veronica Roth

WHAT WILL ALL THE FOUR FANS DO AFTER OCTOBER 22?!

I actually haven't read Divergent, as I'm not a huge dystopian fan. I have both it and Insurgent but have yet to actually crack open the first one - it's just so big...so many pages.

But there's no doubt that this was a huge series, and I know a lot of people will be sad to see it end. At least they can comfort themselves with the upcoming movie!

Lauren Oliver

Yet another dystopian series that I haven't read that's been optioned for film/TV rights. There have been a lot of mixed views on the end of this series, but I've got to give Lauren Oliver props for doing something different. Whether you liked it or not, you've got to admit that it's original.

Bethany Griffin

I actually really love it when there are only two books in a series. I feel like it's the perfect taste, and we don't have to worry about middle book syndrome.

I thought Masque of the Red Death was deliciously creepy and atmospheric, and I can't wait to read what happens at the end of this story!

Tara Hudson

I'm just going to keep going with my sentimental blubbering with this series too, another one of my first NetGalley snags. I'm not usually into ghost stories, but I thought Tara Hudson gave us an interesting take on the ghost mythos with her series.

In other news: her covers are gorgeous.

Brigid Kemmerer

But--but what do you mean there will be no more Merrick brothers?! I NEED MORE MERRICK BROTHERS IN MY LIFE!

Brigid Kemmerer has written some of the best boy relationships with this series, and they're even better because they're all brothers. It's like The Outsiders gone modern, and I was totally sucked in.

Beth Revis

This is another trilogy I was really sad to see end, especially because I enjoyed it from the beginning.

Of course, I was also really sad to see the cover changes, as well, but that's a totally different story...

The Stephanie Perkins Contemporary Collection

I know these books weren't really a trilogy, but they sort of felt like one. I see them as a unit, especially with Isla pulling all the characters back together in France.

And just one more cover note: in this case, Penguin, you're doing it right.

Melina Marchetta

I know Australians already had to say farewell to these books last year, but we Americans have had to bide our time. I actually haven't read Finnikin of the Rock yet, although I've heard some amazing things about it. Now that the last book is coming out, I'll check it out - that way I don't have to wait for the next ones. Hooray!

Meg Cabot

Sometimes, I feel like the only blogger who likes these books, but I really do - I think they're so atmospheric and gorgeously written, and I know the relationship between the MC and John is weird, but I don't care. He's Hades. He's creepy. That's just who he is.

Also, these covers are even more gorgeous side-by-side-by-side. I likes them. Especially that last one. Hi, pretty! :)

Kelly Creagh

(There's no cover for the third book yet, so I just put the first two.)

VAREN!!! I NEEDS MORE VAREN! I'm scared to see how this trilogy ends, just because I feel like Kelly Creagh basically killed me with Enshadowed. But I have faith that she can make this happy in the end, that my beloved Isobel and Varen OTP can be together and I won't be sobbing uncontrollably at the end.

Who am I kidding? I'll be crying no matter what.

Karsten Knight

I actually only read the first one of these just because it wasn't really my thing, but I thought Karsten had a really unique voice, and his book is quite different than a lot of other YA books. I just wish the second two covers could have been as gorgeous as the first one.

Myra McEntire

(Note: This is another one that I think this is the end of a series, but I'm not positive.)

I'm totally late on the Myra McEntire train. I met her at the Decatur Book Festival a couple of years ago, and I have the first book but just haven't made it to it yet. But now that there are more books, I'll feel better about starting the series - another one I don't have to wait for. Hooray!

Jennifer L. Armentrout

(Note: There are five books in this series, but the last one doesn't have a cover yet.)

I know a LOT of people who will be sad to see this series end. I'm so painfully behind - I've only read the first two! It's a good series, but I don't love it half as much as I love the Lux books.

So those are just some of the series that are ending this year, that we're all having to say goodbye to. I know, I know, it's super sad. We can all cry together as we read 2013 debuts and pick out our new favorite authors.

But we also need to remind ourselves that there will be more series by Rae Carson, Jen Armentrout, and Amy Plum in the future. Here's to hoping they'll be as awesome as the series we already love!

Did I forget to mention one of your favorite series that's ending? Let me know in the comments!

*Update: It has since come to my attention that Brigid Kemmerer is actually writing 2 more books in the Elementals series, so that one's actually not ending. HOORAY!!! *throws confetti*
